THERE’S A HOLE IN MY SIDEWALK – Autobiography in Five Short Chapters
By Portia NelsonChapter 1
I walk down the street.
There is a hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in. I am lost. I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault. It takes forever to find a way out.
Chapter 2
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it. I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.
But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.
Chapter 3
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there. I still fall in. It’s a habit.
My eyes are open. I know where I am.
It is my fault. I get out immediately.
Chapter 4
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.
Chapter 5
I walk down another street.
…. what would be the different path you would take this year? This quarter? This month? This Week? Today? Starting now? Just do it. Try it. What’s the worst that can happen? Or the best…? 😉
Enjoy,
Johanna
Johanna:
enjoyed reading your blog ! because we all need to be able to see things from a new perspective, a new angle, a different viewpoint, etc. if we are to do things differently than what we are doing right now. change is good in life. and change comes when we are able to see things in a way that we have seen them before.
awesomeness Johanna !
Thanks Raj – glad that you read my blog! And agree: change is good!
And if someone doesn’t see the goodness – look for it – it may just wait around the corner. Or on a different path…
I like that; awesomeness! To all of us!
Anthony Lee – thank you for giving me the source of the poem! It has now been updated. And here is the link you provided for someone else that would want to read more about each chapter: http://lessonsforliving.com/sidewalk_of_life.htm
Have a great Friday everyone! And Saturday for you guys in Australia and surrounding… 🙂
Ah yes, I love this story. A great reminder.
